Pivot

Cooking and sharing food are a big part of how Sedai connects with community. Since coming to the University of Colorado, they’ve volunteered with the university’s Basic Needs Center, the Boulder chapter of Food Not Bombs, and Bread+Belonging. “I like cooking, and cooking with other people, and giving people food,” Sedai shares, “I love it. It is something that I do a couple of times a week and it's a lot of fun!” They first came to B+B through volunteering to cook dinner, and over the past two years have become a regular participant and a member of the student leadership team.

For their first several years, Sedai studied engineering, but they came to realize that they didn’t really like the courses or the work they were doing. As Sedai decided to pivot into a very different major, Bread+Belonging has been an important support for their discernment. “Being able to talk to other students about how their experiences are going now, and also older community members…has been a really helpful and comforting presence,” Sedai recalls, “I feel like I'm not going through this alone, because I'm not. There are lots of other people in similar situations, and lots of people who have done stuff like this before and can give me advice and reassurance that this will be okay.”

Being a part of Bread+Belonging has also grown Sedai’s appreciation for slowing down. In a world that so often prioritizes efficiency, they celebrate the sometimes messy experience of cooking and eating together. “The process of doing things… is something that I am appreciating more and more as I am a part of this community,” they reflect. “For a meal that is cooked, there are so many people that are a part of this process… so much time that has gone into it and so much labor from people. And I feel like that is what makes it meaningful.”

Sedai is grateful for the ways the B+B community continues to accompany them in this season of transition. Your generosity sustains this community of care, discernment, and formation students like Sedai. Thank you for your partnership in this vital ministry!
