Busy

It’s safe to say that Sarah is a busy person. A junior at the University of Colorado, Boulder, she is a double major in biochemistry and molecular biology, with a minor in Spanish. Along with working in a lab and playing the cello in the campus orchestra, she manages to make time to get outdoors to hike, cross-country ski, and simply enjoy the beauty of the mountains. Even with all that, she makes it a priority to attend the Bread+Belonging dinners on Tuesday evenings.

During her freshman year, Sarah found that she missed being a part of a faith-based community like her beloved church back home, and she began looking for a church in the area that was welcoming to LGBTQ+ people. She stumbled upon St. Aidan’s, saw that there was a free dinner once a week for students, and decided to try it out. “This is a place where I feel really understood and appreciated,” she explains, “It’s a nice space to get to come every Tuesday night where I know I’ll get  great conversation and great food with some really awesome people.”

Sarah finds that the Bread+Belonging dinner creates the opening to build relationships.  Dinner together around tables creates space for connection and conversation. Because of B+B’s connection to the broader church community, people of faith, and opportunities for worship, Bread+Belonging has provided her the faith-based community that she missed. The diversity of the students, the B+B hosts, and the guest presenters has broadened her horizons. “It has made me more open to new experiences because I get to hear from so many people who do such a wider variety of things,” she reflects, “It’s made me want to try and do more things in my life and open myself up to being a little uncomfortable, knowing I will get a great experience out of it. It has helped me think about the world in a very different way.”

Thank you so very much for your care for students. Your generosity to and your prayers for Lutheran Campus Ministry at the University of Colorado, Boulder, are what support our Bread+Belonging programs where students, like Sarah, find a community in which they experience God’s grace, as they explore and learn and grow. We are grateful.
